The San Francisco 49ers are set to receive a massive annual adjustment for 2026 to their salary cap, according to Over the Cap. The Niners are set to receive a $20.6 million adjustment for 2026, thanks to insurance policies taken out in the event of injuries.
We will see the difference reflected in the salary cap and the 49ers’ cash spending. It’s not uncommon for this to happen. It became a big news story in September 2024 when the Jets failed to have an insurance addendum in Aaron Rodgers’ contract. By not buying an insurance policy for Rodgers, the Jets missed out on an opportunity to recoup up to $22 million in insurance proceeds.
It’s not as easy to figure out which specific players have policies and for how much. However, we know the team will receive roughly $7 million in cap relief from Nick Bosa’s insurance policy, as reported in September 2025.
Since the number is over $20 million, the logical conclusion is that the 49ers have policies for their other star players who missed a significant chunk of the season, including Fred Warner and Brock Purdy, and perhaps even George Kittle.
If those numbers become public, we will provide an update. For now, the 49ers have $27.1 million in cap space heading into 2026.
