ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Peter Schrager were both on The Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday to provide updates about where the San Francisco 49ers stand with Trent Williams.
Schrager was asked how real any trade scenarios were:
You could argue he’s still the best left tackle in the sport. On any given day, he’s the player that defensive ends fear the most. Like I said with A.J. Brown, and like we had with Maxx Crosby, John Lynch’s phone line is open.
Do you want the best tackle of his generation? OK, so what’s it going to cost? Because his number right now, and what he’s expecting if he gets another contract, is going to be exorbitant.
So, let’s explore this. Let’s see. But I don’t think that’s coming from the 49ers. I think that’s obviously a report from us in the media. And let’s see if the 49ers do get calls. That’s how this works usually. He could be had if they have a certain number, had a certain offer.
But make no mistake about it, the 49ers actually love Trent Williams. They’d love to get it done. The numbers, just like we’ve seen with so many star players in the last couple of years, the numbers have to make sense.
Schefter said the 49ers and Trent Williams have been discussing a new deal:
So on Saturday, when he wants a certain amount of money, the 49ers say to him, ‘Hey, we think you’re worth that money, and we can’t reach this agreement, if you want to go find that from another team that will then get us back the value of a 1st round draft pick because you want all this money, then we’re willing to listen.
But the 49ers aren’t shopping him, and he’s not expected to be traded. Now, could something materialize? Sure, something always could. But I don’t think that’s a realistic option, and it’s more along the lines of them placating him and saying, “Go head, we’ll see if you can find somebody willing to pay you that.”
The 49ers and Williams have until March 20 to work out a deal. That is the date when his $22.21 million option is due.
