The San Francisco 49ers have the perfect opportunity to trade Mac Jones this offseason. Teams like Arizona, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Indianapolis could all use starting quarterbacks.
Free agent options available include Kyler Murray, Aaron Rodgers, Kirk Cousins, and Justin Fields. So it’s no surprise to hear The Athletic’s Dianni Russini tweet that a few teams have called the Niners to see what the price tag is for Jones.
It’s a bit surprising when Russini said, “Many interested around the league describe their price as astronomical.” Do the 49ers really want a 1st round pick and nothing else for Jones? His value may never be higher than it is now, especially when you don’t know what the quarterback landscape will look like this time next year.
Perhaps the 49ers are convinced they will, at worst, walk away with a comp pick if Jones signs a lucrative contract in the 2027 free agency. I’d lean toward this coming off as the 49ers overvaluing an asset they can flip into a draft pick.
It also comes off like the team is admitting they might not be sold on Brock Purdy’s health if they are not willing to part ways with Jones. The reason you are getting offers for Jones to begin with is due to his contract. That’s the selling point just as much as his play was in 2025.
We will see if the 49ers end up budging on any offers. They could also receive offers as we get closer and closer to the draft. The argument that the team shouldn’t move Jones unless they are blown away by an offer falls short when you realize they could lose him for nothing next year.
