San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said starting left guard Ben Bartch will be “out for a while” with a high-ankle sprain. He’s not the only lineman banged up. Backup swing tackle Spencer Burford hurt his knee and is day-to-day. The team will look to see if Burford’s injury heals on its own.

Unfortunately for Bartch, you could see this injury coming a mile away. He hasn’t shown the ability to remain healthy throughout his career. That didn’t change in limited action last season with the 49ers, nor did it in the preseason.

The good news is rookie Connor Colby looked like he belonged after filling in for Bartch on Sunday. Shanahan spoke positively about Colby’s debut:

“I’ve loved how he’s been here so far. I thought he came in that game early — I think it was late first quarter — but I thought he did a hell of a job. He made some plays and he’ll get better the more he plays but he was ready for the moment and definitely helped us with that win.”

The 49ers averaged 5.3 yards per carry on four attempts running behind the left guard on Sunday. Brian Robinson’s longest carry was the direct result of Colby clearing out the linebacker. He’ll face far more difficult and complex looks, but Colby’s performance was encouraging in Week 2.

If Bartch lands on the Injured Reserve, Drew Moss or Nick Zakelj would get promoted from the practice squad.

Wide receiver Jauan Jennings will also be evaluated throughout the week as he deals with an ankle injury. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk and defensive back Siran Neal are in the concussion protocol this week.

Robert Beal signed with the practice squad after clearing waivers.
