The San Francisco 49ers worked out four different defensive tackles Wednesday afternoon. Ahead of Thursday’s joint practice against the Denver Broncos, the team signed one of them. Michael Dwumfour gets another stint with the Niners. To make room, the team released cornerback Eli Apple, who signed on July 28.

Releasing Apple might be a good sign that Renardo Green is close to a return. Head coach Kyle Shanahan was hopeful that Green would return during Week 2 of the preseason against the Las Vegas Raiders, which is next Monday.

Dwumfour signed with the New York Jets under Robert Saleh as an undrafted free agent in 2021. He also spent three seasons with DeMeco Ryans in Houston. In between those stints with the Texans, Dwumfour was with the 49ers’ practice squad. He was most recently with the Cleveland Browns last season, where Dwumfour appeared in one game.

The need for a defensive tackle was real. The 49ers need enough bodies at the position to give their starters a breather, but also be able to run a quality practice so their offensive lineman can get quality reps against NFL-caliber players.
