The final preseason game before the real dance begins
Breathe, San Francisco 49ers fans, the preseason is just about over. Today is the last preseason game and then the real football starts. But first, let’s tune into the 49ers as they head to Las Vegas to play the Las Vegas Raiders. The game will be broadcast on NFL network, which typically means during the preseason the home team’s broadcasters will be the broadcasters calling the game, however Greg Papa and Tim Ryan are available in the California markets and there may be a way to switch to the 49ers broadcast.
The 49ers plan on playing some starters in this game, including quarterback Brock Purdy. While Kyle Shanahan’s decision to play Purdy behind a patchwork offensive line in the last game against the New Orleans Saints may seem controversial to some, Shanahan didn’t seem to mind and wants to get Purdy more game reps.
There are some starters you can expect to not see. 2024 first round pick, wide receiver Ricky Pearsall won’t be playing as he is recovering from injury. Left tackle Trent Williams won’t be playing as he continues to hold out until a new deal is reached. Also, and prepare to be surprised, Brandon Aiyuk most likely won’t suit up because there has been no movement on that deal either.
While we’ll get to see a series or two from Purdy at least on Sunday, the big thing to watch will be the backup quarterback battle between Josh Dobbs and Brandon Allen. Last week against the Saints, Dobbs took what would have been a boring segment of the game and made it interesting. Mostly from this play at the goalline.
Outside of Dobbs there’s a few other people to keep your eye on. Trent Taylor is fighting for a roster spot as the absolute floor of the 49ers’ punt return efforts. Meanwhile Ronnie Bell might also be on watch as he’s had an issue with consistency holding onto the ball. And of course, Jake Moody. Not just because he missed a field goal last week, but because of this new kickoff rule and how he can position the ball.
Once again, you have an easy time watching the game. The game is going to be on NFL Network. As long as you have that channel you should be in good shape. You can also stream the game on the FOX Sports app. As we said above, expect to hear the Raiders home broadcasters on this since the 49ers are in Vegas, but there may be a way to swich over.
If you didn’t drop the $6.99 for NFL plus last week, no need to do it now. Save your money for Sunday ticket.
