Veteran free agent cornerback Vontae Davis won’t be joining the 49ers after visiting the club in Santa Clara last week.

The former Colt, and brother of long-time 49ers tight end Vernon Davis, will instead join the Buffalo Bills, according to an ESPN report.

Davis, 29, only played five games last season, but has been given a clean bill of health after undergoing surgery on a core muscle following his release from Indianapolis.

The nine-year veteran only missed three games over his previous four seasons. Davis totaled 34 tackles, 10 pass breakups and one interception in 2016. He was named to the Pro-Bowl the previous two campaigns.

Cornerback remains a glaring hole heading into the offseason for San Francisco. The 49ers remain among the league leaders in cap space and could be a destination for sought-after free agents at the position like Trumaine Johnson, Malcolm Butler and Davis’ former Colts teammate, Rashaan Melvin.
