NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero discussed the availability of San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey early Friday morning. McCaffrey hadn’t appeared on the injury report all summer, but popped up on the injury list for the first time on Thursday.
Pelissero doesn’t believe we should be sounding the alarms:
And no, this is not a replay from last year before Week 1. McCaffrey popped up on yesterday’s injury report as limited with a calf injury. I will say this cautiously. Here’s what I would tell you. I do not get the sense, based on the conversations that I’ve had so far, that there are alarm bells going off about Christian McCaffrey at this point.
If there is any player that you’re going to take precautions with, if he feels something in practice, it’s the guy who is arguably your best player and missed most of the last season because of the variety of different ailments.
We also know that calf injuries can be tricky. At times, they are precursors to Achilles injuries. McCaffrey had issues with both of his Achilles last year. Again, I do not get the sense that this is Defcon 1 at this point. But the 49ers will be back out on the field this afternoon. Kyle Shanahan will address the media. We’ll get a better sense about what, if anything, McCaffrey will be available when they kick off the season on Sunday against the Seahawks.
Pelissero’s report confirms the tweet we showed yesterday that this was a precautionary move, and the 49ers, rightfully so, are being careful with one of their most valuable players.
