Trade news around the NFL broke on Sunday, as the Houston Texans moved wide receiver John Metchie to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a Day 3 pick swap and tight end Harrison Bryant.
Metchie, a second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, hadn’t seen much playing time through the first three years of his career, dealing with a variety of injuries.
He had caught 24 passes for 254 yards last season, but the Texans added wide receivers Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel on Day 2 of the 2025 NFL Draft, leaving uncertainty regarding Metchie’s role this year.
Interestingly, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that the 49ers were one of the teams interested in Metchie before the Texans traded him to the Eagles on Sunday, but Philadelphia made a better offer.
San Francisco’s wide receiver corps is looking much different in 2025, as they no longer have Deebo Samuel, who was traded to the Washington Commanders in March.
Additionally, Brandon Aiyuk is expected to miss the first part of the season while recovering from the torn ACL and MCL injuries he sustained back in October. Meanwhile, Jauan Jennings is dealing with a calf issue, having missed the last few practices of training camp.
So, the 49ers currently have 2024 first-round pick Ricky Pearsall atop their depth chart, and could be looking for more depth. They have made a couple of additions during camp, and Metchie would’ve made sense as a young wideout with upside in the backend of the rotation.
Nonetheless, he’s now a Philadelphia Eagle, and the 49ers will move on and potentially look for another option ahead of the season.
