Will there be an in-house replacement for Peters?
The Washington Commanders hired Martin Mayhew as their general manager in 2021 from the San Francisco 49ers after Mayhew served as the Senior personnel executive and Vice President of Player Personnel for the Niners in 2019-2020. But the results haven’t been there for the Commanders, and they wanted a change.
Current 49ers assistant general manager Adam Peters was named a finalist for Washington’s general manager position earlier in the week, and was officially named the Commander’s GM, according to several national media members.
Peters has been one of the top candidates for a few years now. Many believed he would wait until the 49ers won a Super Bowl or continue to stay in the Bay Area, as Peters has declined several positions over the years. But Peters must see the opportunity in Washington as a job too good to pass up.
Peters can still keep Mayhew around if he chooses to. He was John Lynch’s right-hand man since 2017. The 49ers’ success in the draft and in free agency speaks for itself. Peters’s success isn’t limited to what he’s done in San Francisco. He won Super Bowls with the Patriots and the Broncos. History would suggest Peters fares well with Washington, too.
Tariq Ahmad is the Direct of College Scouting for the 49ers. RJ Gillen is the Director of Pro Personnel. Those are the two potential in-house replacements for Peters.
