The Chiefs are finalizing a trade to send talented cornerback Marcus Peters to the Rams for a package of draft picks, as first reported by ESPN.

And according to NFL Network, the 49ers were among the teams interesting in acquiring Peters from Kansas City.

Among the teams interested in trading for #Chiefs CB Marcus Peters were the #Browns and #49ers. This also means #Rams CB Trumaine Johnson is moving on.

Peters, 25, has evolved into one of the best corners in football after being selected 18th overall in the 2015 NFL draft. He went on pick after the 49ers chose defensive lineman Arik Armstead, who has struggled to stay on the field in two of his three seasons and has six career sacks.

Peters has 19 interceptions in 45 games for Kansas City, was named to the Pro Bowl in his first two seasons and a first-team All-Pro in 2016.

But Peters reportedly became a headache for the Chiefs to deal with. They suspended him one game last season after an outburst during a loss to the Jets which included throwing a flag and his socks into the stands and getting into a disagreement with a coach.

The move to the Rams means the 49ers will have to face Peters twice a season within the NFC West. Los Angeles had the league’s 12th-ranked passing defense last season and will likely replace Trumaine Johnson, who was a candidate for the franchise tag.

Johnson after the deal is likely to hit the free agent market, where he could be an intriguing candidate for San Francisco, who have a void at cornerback in the starting lineup opposite Ahkello Witherspoon, a third-round draft choice in 2017.
