49ers linebacker Reuben Foster on Sunday was booked at the Santa Clara County Jail on charges related to domestic violence, as first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.
Update: Foster was arrested on suspicion of possessing an assault rifle, according to a report form the San Jose Mercury News.
It would mark the second arrest for Foster in the last month. He was detained Jan. 12 in Alabama on marijuana charges. He was held in Santa Clara on $75,000 bail for his recent arrest over the weekend, per the report.
“The San Francisco 49ers organization is aware of the report regarding Reuben Foster. We take matters of this nature seriously and are gathering all pertinent information,” the team wrote in a statement.
Foster, one of the 49ers’ most promising young players, had a standout rookie season in 2017. He was ranked by scouting service Pro Football Focus as the No. 4 linebacker in the NFL.
The Alabama alum was widely considered one of the best prospects in the 2017 NFL draft class after winning the Butkus Award in his final season, given to college football’s top linebacker. But he fell to the 31st pick due to character and medical concerns.
Foster at the scouting combine leading up to his draft failed a drug test due to a dilute sample, likely placing him in the league’s substance abuse program. He missed six games due to a high ankle sprain and a rib injury.
There had been no announcement regarding a suspension following his arrest last month – but one might be coming if the league decides Foster violated the personal conduct policy because of his arrest.
But Foster might be in for a lengthy suspension in accordance with the NFL’s policy regarding domestic violence.
