The San Francisco 49ers released their first practice participation report of Week 3, and there are some notable names present and missing. As mentioned earlier, Malcolm Smith returned to practice and was not even included in the “full participant” list. That suggests he is 100 percent, and should be good to play this Sunday.

Safety Jaquiski Tartt was a DNP after injuring his shoulder late in Sunday’s win over the Detroit Lions. Tartt dealt with the shoulder injury previously, so this will be something to monitor. The Thursday session will be key for him getting on the field this weekend against the Kansas City Chiefs. If Tartt is limited, that bodes well. If he is a DNP, that would be problematic for the strong safety position. Antone Exum is the reserve strong safety, although conceivably Jimmie Ward could play there as well.

Of course, Ward might be needed at cornerback once again. Ahkello Witherspoon struggled and was eventually benched this past weekend, and now is listed as limited with an ankle injury. We’ll have to wait and see what Thursday and Friday bring.

Marquise Goodwin was a limited participant as he rehabs his quadricep injury. Meanwhile, Joshua Garnett was a DNP and Mike Person was listed as limited. Person seems set to start Week 3, but Garnett will be one to track on Thursday.
