After multiple injuries at the position, the San Francisco 49ers are signing veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks to their practice squad, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Cooks, who turns 33 on September 25th, is coming off a season where he played 15 games, spending time with both the New Orleans Saints and Buffalo Bills. Across both teams, he caught 24 passes for 279 yards.
Cooks ended up playing a considerable amount for the Bills in the playoffs, seeing action in both games, while catching five passes for 78 yards.
Over his 12-year NFL career, Cooks has posted 734 catches for 9,811 yards and 60 touchdowns, which includes six seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards. He has spent time with the Saints, Bills, Houston Texans, Los Angeles Rams, Dallas Cowboys, and New England Patriots.
Schefter reported that Cooks will get up to speed on the practice squad, but the 49ers could need him sooner than later after injuries to De’Zhaun Stribling and Demarcus Robinson at the outside receiver spot. Khadarel Hodge and Jacob Cowing ended up playing 20 and 24 snaps, respectively, against the Miami Dolphins as a result.
The 49ers have been beaten up at receiver this offseason, with Ricky Pearsall out for the year. Now, Stribling and Robinson are expected to miss an extended period of time, and head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated the team would try out some players at the position ahead of Week 3.
Well, the team is now signing Cooks, who will join his seventh career team as he enters his 13th year in the NFL
