They have the ammo to do it. That’s for sure.
The 2019 NFL draft gets going on Thursday, which means we only have a few more of these mock drafts before we go and do something else. Today’s mock draft comes from Sports Illustrated’s Gary Gramling and starts with the scenario we’ve been getting more and more familiar with, the 49ers taking Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa.
The Arizona Cardinals, however, do not get Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray with the No. 1 pick. Instead there’s a trade to the New York Giants where they take Murray instead. Regardless of the team, this gives the 49ers the full draft board. Here’s Gramlin’s comments towards Bosa:
Even with Dee Ford in the fold, the 49ers are desperate for disruptive edge rushers after forcing a record-low seven takeaways last year. Bosa is the best in this draft, which outweighs all those complimentary things he said about Spiro Agnew on his Geocities website.
So nothing more to say right? Well, we’re not done yet. Gramling has the 49ers trading back into the first round at No. 20 via the Pittsburgh Steelers and getting a defensive back. The 49ers get LSU cornerback Greedy Williams.
The 49ers, in need of some defensive backs that can catch the ball now that they’ve upgraded their pass rush, jump up from Pick 36, giving the Steelers a third-rounder (No. 67) and a 2020 sixth-rounder for this pick and the Steelers’ fifth-rounder (No. 141).
I do like this trade, and I do like the pick. My only issue is the 49ers getting a cornerback when safety has been a need. Part of me says they have enough safeties and 2019 was a bizarre set of circumstances when all of them dropped like flies. The other part of me says they need a dependable option at the position. Trading back in and getting a cornerback still leaves questions there.
The other issue is that Ole Miss wide receiver A.J. Brown, who began as someone I didn’t follow and has now become my draft crush goes 26th. Brown wouldn’t get a call out like this if not for the good relationship he’s built with Jerry Rice. Is wide receiver a bigger need than safety? That’s up to you, but he is available in this draft if the 49ers were interested in trading back in.
It will be interesting to see if the 49ers trade back into the first round for the third time in four years.
