The San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday announced a pair of corresponding roster moves as the injuries stack up on their offensive line.
Offensive tackle Jaylon Moore was officially placed on IR with a quad injury he sustained in the 49ers’ Week 16 loss to the Miami Dolphins. Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday in a conference call told reporters Moore would be out for the final two games of the regular season. His placement on IR means his season is over.
To fill his roster spot, the 49ers added offensive tackle Charlie Heck from the Arizona Cardinals practice squad. Heck was a fourth-round pick of the Houston Texans in the 2020 draft out of the University of North Carolina. He started 21 of the 41 games he played in four years with the Texans.
This offseason he joined the Cardinals and played in seven games with no starts.
The 49ers may not be done making IR moves. Left tackle Trent Williams is also out for the year with an ankle injury per Shanahan, though he is still on the active roster. Left guard Aaron Banks is working through an MCL injury and is also out for the season, but he hasn’t been placed on IR either.
With Moore and Williams on the sideline, the 49ers will turn to Spencer Burford who is dealing with a calf injury. If Burford can’t play in Week 17 vs. the Detroit Lions, it may be Heck or the recently-signed Austen Pleasants starting on the offensive line the final two weeks.
