It’s not going to be easy from here on out.
It’s time to enter a difficult stretch the right way. The San Francisco 49ers are back to host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Buccaneers have some history as they are the first team quarterback Brock Purdy had a start against and Purdy proceeded to light them up. This year, the Buccaneers has less expectations with the retirement of Tom Brady, but current quarterback Baker Mayfield has been playing decent enough despite the 4-5 record. This will be an afternoon game. Joe Davis has the play-by-play while Daryl Johnston has commentary.
The 49ers proceeded to dismantle what was a hot Jacksonville Jaguars team 34-3. While the Buccaneers haven’t had near the success as the Jaguars had, they are no gimmie. The 49ers are also neck and neck with the Seattle Seahawks for the NFC West crown. There isn’t going to be any room for error the rest of the way and these games are the ones the 49ers need to have. Brock Purdy had one of his (if not simply his best) games as a pro last week and will look to keep the momentum.
The Buccaneers ended a four-loss streak last week, beating the Tennessee Titans 20-6. It’s a bit hard to pinpoint what they are. They had a win over the Minnesota Vikings in Minnesota (a very difficult place to play) but also have only managed to beat the Chicago Bears, and the Saints. Baker Mayfield hasn’t been too much of an issue going 197 for 305 (64.6 completion percentage) with 14 touchdowns to five interceptions. Some things just haven’t been working out. The 49ers opened as 10.5 favorites and that line has now hit 12 on Draft Kings Sportsbook. That indicates the money is continuing to pile in for the 49ers. Despite the odds, don’t sleep on the Buccaneers.
The 49ers are getting their team healthy again. Cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. was activated off the PUP list and could debut on Sunday. They will have some issues on offensive line with guard Aaron Banks still dealing with turf toe and Nick Zakelj is out with a bicepts injury. Trent Williams and Colton McKivitz, two linemen who have battled injuries the last few weeks, are not on the report.
The Buccaneers will be without Safety Ryan Neal (thumb). Cornerback Carlton Davis (toe), offensive lineman Matt Feiler (knee), defensive back Josh Hayes (concussion), and linebacker Devin White (foot) were all listed as questionable, but they participated in Friday’s practice session. . Fortunately, they all fully participated in Friday’s practice session.
