Kyle Shanahan is happy with his current group of tight ends.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said that tight end Ross Dwelley suffered a high ankle sprain and will miss a few weeks. A popular tight end in name, Zach Ertz, is still a free agent.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter believes that Ertz is destined to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles. When asked if the Niners would have an interest in Ertz after Dwelley’s injury, Shanahan said, “I know John [Lynch] looks into all that stuff. I haven’t heard anything now. I wouldn’t think so. I know we’re pretty happy with this group.”
After George Kittle, it’s been Dwelley and Charlie Woerner, who plays sparingly on offense. But Dwelley will need to be replaced on special teams. We’ll see if the team believes tight end Brayden Willis has the chops to cut it as a special teamer, or if they activate Jake Tonges from the practice squad, or a player at another position instead.
Arik Armstead has an injury that’s bothering him in both his food and knee. Shanahan said the team is gathering more information about Armstead’s injury and will have an update when the team returns to practice on Wednesday.
Cornerback Darrell Luter suffered a hamstring injury and will miss a week of practice.
Right guard Spencer Burford has a knee injury, although he’ll have a chance to play next Sunday. Shanahan said that Burford put together three good practices last week and showed no setbacks: “Spencer held his own. Did a good job. Thought he had a good game.”
