Ambry Thomas will have surgery on his hand

The San Francisco 49ers received good news on the injury front. According to head coach Kyle Shanahan, Christian McCaffrey will miss Week 18 with a mild calf strain. But it doesn’t sound like McCaffrey suffered an injury that will keep him out for an extended, and he should be good to go for the playoffs.

Cornerback Ambry Thomas will miss the regular season finale, too. Shanahan said that Thomas, who played with a cast in Week 17, will get surgery on his broken hand. I asked Shanahan if Thomas would play with a club after surgery, and he said it’d be something similar to what Ambry wore this past Sunday.

So we’ll get a heavy dosage of Elijah Mitchell and probably Darrell Luter Jr. in place of McCaffrey and Thomas next week.

Defensive tackle Arik Armstead will continue to rest his ankle and knee.

Tight end Ross Dwelley is unlikely to play this week with a high-ankle sprain.

Wide receiver Jauan Jennings and offensive tackle Jaylon Moore remain in the concussion protocol.

Safety Ji’Ayir Brown “has a chance” to play this coming Sunday, but Shanahan was non-committal. The same can be said about the 49ers playing specific starters against the Los Angeles Rams. Shanahan wouldn’t even say if Brock Purdy would start on Sunday.

Wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud will have his practice window opened. McCloud hasn’t played since Week 12. He’s been on the injured reserve since with a rib injury.
