The Rams are sitting Matthew Stafford. Perhaps for playoff positioning?
The Los Angeles Rams are making a quarterback change for the regular season finale. Matthew Stafford will get the week off, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. That means the San Francisco 49ers will face quarterback Carson Wentz, who will be making his first start since Week 17 of last year.
The Niners saw Wentz when he was with the Washington Commanders last year. The former No. 2 overall pick went 12-for-16 for 123 yards and a touchdown. In 2021, Wentz logged himself a “QB win” over the Niners in a 30-18 win. But Wentz had a subpar game statistically as he only threw for 150 yards on 26 attempts, though he did throw for two touchdowns and run for one.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan will speak to the media Wednesday afternoon, so we’ll know soon enough whether it’ll be a Wentz versus Sam Darnold battle in Week 18.
The Rams could be playing for seeding here. If Los Angeles loses, and Green Bay wins, then the Rams travel to Dallas to take on the Cowboys. That would help them “avoid” Detroit if that’s a thing.
Sean McVay would have the coaching advantage regardless in the playoffs by my estimation, but the health of Stafford is more important heading into the playoffs than anything.
Now, will San Francisco follow suit? Stay tuned.
