After cutting their roster down to 53 players on Tuesday, John Lynch, Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers were tasked with filling out their 2024 practice squad. Once players pass through the waiver process on Wednesday, the 49ers can add up to 16 players to their practice squad. The 49ers can add another player to get to 17 if they are from the International Player Program.
By NFL rules, 10 of the players on the practice squad need to be rookies or second-year players. There are no restrictions for the remaining six players.
Teams can elevate as many as two practice squad players to the gameday roster without adding them to the active roster. However, the individual practice squad players can only be elevated a maximum of three times during the regular season.
The 49ers began adding players to their practice squad with the addition of rookie quarterback Tanner Mordecai on Wednesday. Here’s a look at all the players the 49ers are building their practice squad around.
