Now that it’s officially the preseason, the San Francisco 49ers PR team made an unofficial depth chart.

There’s no reason to get up in arms about unofficial depth charts, but fans of every team do it every August. However, there are no real surprises here. For example, defensive tackle Kevin Givens might not be ready to return from a pectoral injury until a month or two into the season. We know he’s not the starter.

Tre Brown as the starting nickel is comical. On Wednesday, defensive coordinator Robert Saleh said, “You could probably say he has the inside track in a very long race” when talking about rookie Upton Stout having a starting spot. Saleh didn’t want to crown the rookie because, “He’s still got to show that he can do what he’s been doing against different competition.” But unless Stout forgets how to play football, it’s unlikely that he’ll begin the season as a backup.

Aside from that, everything seems to check out. If the 49ers are in base, Luke Gifford is more suited for the strongside linebacker. Johnny Holland made it seem like rookie Nick Martin is still getting used to the defense. It’s not that Martin has a ways to go, but he’s a rookie and not all first-year players hit the ground running. Martin is still in the process of trusting his eyes. Holland also said that he wouldn’t be surprised if Dee Winters plays 90 percent of the snaps for the defense this season.

There are plenty of players fighting for depth spots. Dallis Flowers is making the roster as of today at cornerback, which would’ve surprised anybody back in May. We’ll see if he can build on a strong training camp.

Offensively, it feels like the depth chart is as penciled in as it can be in early August. Those are the starters up front, while Nick Zakelj, Austen Pleasants, and Spencer Burford are the backups. I was wrong about Matt Hennessy. Offensive line coach Chris Foerster only views him as a center, while Zakelj has the ability to play both.

Everyone tends to gravitate toward skill players in the preseason, but it’ll be difficult for an unknown or unheralded player to make this roster. But that’s what the preseason is for, and that’s why we still have to play the games. Perhaps someone can stand out or make a name for themselves during live action.

The rookies will play. Mykel Williams is starting. He’s the first-round pick. It was always going to be that way. Stout walked into an ideal situation and is taking advantage of his opportunities. Alfred Collins and C.J. West might not be listed as starters, but they should play starter-level snaps.
