NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that the San Francisco 49ers are bringing in veteran kicker Eddy Pineiro for a workout after waiving Jake Moody.

Pineiro was with the New York Jets and the 49ers’ current special teams coordinator, Brant Boyer, in 2021. That season, Pineiro made all eight of his kicks, including going 3-for-3 from 40-49 yards, and his one kick over 50 yards.

Pineiro spent the previous three seasons with the Carolina Panthers. In 2024, Pineiro made 22 of his 26 kicks. He was 1-for-2 from 50+, making a 43-yarder. He was 6-for-8 from 40-49 yards, and also missed one kick from 30-39 yards. Pineiro went 33-for-35 on extra point attempts.

Pineiro has trended in the wrong direction since his one season with Boyer. He’s gone from 100 percent to 94.3, to 86.2, to 84.6. That 84 percent was the same number Jake Moody made during his rookie season. However, Moody fell to 70.6 percent last season.

Familiarity might make Pineiro the man for the job. Being better during his career than Moody won’t hurt, either. Another way to look at the two is that Pineiro has fewer misses in 126 field goal attempts than Moody does in 62 attempts.

The 49ers also officially signed Kendrick Bourne, placed George Kittle on the Injured Reserve, and waived wide receiver Robbie Chosen from the practice squad. By releasing Chosen, the 49ers can “play it by ear” at kicker. If they sign Pineiro to the practice squad, he can be elevated as many as three times. So, they don’t have to fully commit to him as they weigh their options at kicker. Releasing Chosen gives them that flexibility.
