49ers Garoppolo

We hand out four game balls to the San Francisco 49ers from QB Jimmy Garoppolo’s first start — a 15-14 victory over the Chicago Bears.

On Monday’s Locked On 49ers Podcast, host Brian Peacock handed out four game balls to the San Francisco 49ers after their last-minute victory over the Chicago Bears:

K Robbie Gould

When you score all the points, you get a game ball. Gould — who played 11 seasons in Chicago — had his revenge game, converting each of his five attempts. Although all of his field goals were short — ranging from 24 to 35 yards — Gould took pride in each, and looked to the Bears’ sideline after the game-winner.

QB Jimmy Garoppolo

The 49ers looked like a different team with Garoppolo under center, and moved the ball with ease down the field. Garoppolo finished his first start with the 49ers with a career-high 293 passing yards. Garoppolo’s presence was particularly felt on third downs, which the Niners converted at a 56-percent rate. The 49ers’ new quarterback gave the team — and its fans — some much-needed hope for the future.

WR Marquise Goodwin

Goodwin had his most consistent day as a pro, hauling in each of his eight targets, for a total of 99 yards. Goodwin is no longer the “track-and-field star playing wide receiver” from his days in Buffalo; on Sunday, he demonstrated his expanded route repertoire, and bounced up after taking a couple of big hits.

WR Trent Taylor

Taylor — who has struggled at times with his transition to the NFL — finally broke out with Garoppolo under center. The 5-foot-8 receiver — who absolutely dominated at the college level — showed the 49ers what he can do with an accurate quarterback, catching each of his six targets for 92 yards, and converting multiple third-down attempts.
