Holes exist on both sides of the football for the 49ers, but they stuck with one side in the latest three-round mock draft at Draft Wire. San Francisco is in an intriguing position since they don’t necessarily have any need that stands out among others aside from an edge rusher. That will afford them the opportunity to focus on taking the best player available instead of targeting specific positions.

In Draft Wire’s three-round mock, the 49ers strike gold with their first-round pick before snagging a pair of other playmakers on the defensive side in Rounds 2 and 3.

Let’s take a look at who the 49ers selected:

Round 1 (Pick 2) – Nick Bosa, EDGE, Ohio State

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

The idea that Bosa will be available for the 49ers at No. 2 is gaining traction as the college football season comes to a close and draft season begins in earnest. Alabama defensive lineman Quinnen Williams went first overall in this mock, allowing the former consensus top pick to fall to the 49ers at No. 2.

Any scenario where an edge rusher doesn’t go first is a dream for the 49ers. That puts them in essentially the position they would’ve been in had they picked No. 1 overall. They’d have every edge rusher in the 2018 class available to them. It’s hard to imagine at this point in the pre-draft process that they’d pass on the opportunity to pick Bosa.
