Shon Coleman received a pay bump due to a proven performance escalator early this year. Coleman didn’t play a single-snap for the San Francisco 49ers in 2018. There were 84 snaps played by a non-Joe Staley/Mike McGlinchey offensive tackle. Each of those went to Gary Gilliam. Coleman went from starting every game with the Cleveland Browns the year before being inactive with the 49ers.
The 49ers acquired Coleman from the Browns in exchange for a 2019 seventh-round draft pick. This year, Coleman is expected to be the swing-tackle. If he doesn’t play a snap, it was a good year for the Niners. Coleman has the experience in the event he is called on to play.

What to expect in 2019
Pro Football Focus graded Coleman as a 61 overall when he started with the Browns in 2017. That is below average. He graded a bit better as a rookie, but he also only played 62 snaps. Kyle Shanahan saw a fit in Coleman, but there aren’t any expectations for Coleman this year. That could change next year.
Odds on making the roster
Coleman will need to beat out rookie Justin Skule to make the roster. Physically, Coleman is superior. He has the experience as well. Unless Skule plays out of his mind, Coleman will be on the roster Week 1.
