Football will be back in a couple weeks, technically.

The San Francisco 49ers won’t be playing football together in April. They will be starting up their offseason program very soon, though. On Monday, the NFL announced the offseason workout program dates for all 32 teams. Check out the dates for the Niners:

Day 1 of offseason program: April 15th. The team

Rookie Minicamp: May 5-7

OTAs: May 20-21, 23, 28-29, 31; June 3-4, 6

Mandatory Minicamp: June 11-13

There are three phases of the offseason program.

  • Phase 1 encompasses the first two weeks of the program. During this time, all that takes place is strength and conditioning workouts, along with physical rehabilitation.
  • Phase 2 covers the next three weeks. On-field workouts may include individual player instruction and drills as well as team practice conducted on a “separates” basis. No live contact or team offense vs. team defense drills are permitted.
  • Phase 3 is the next four weeks. Teams may conduct a total of 10 days of organized team practice activity, or “OTAs”. No live contact is permitted, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are permitted.

Will we be able to see much of anything? No. Just a reminder that the 49ers are inching closer to working together again. Which means we are this close to watching them play football again.
