The 49ers’ quest to improve their depth continued Thursday when they signed linebacker David Mayo to a two-year deal.
Mayo is a 25-year-old former fifth-round pick of the Panthers out of Texas State. He has just four starts in his four seasons, including three last year, and he played just a handful of defensive snaps for Carolina.
Special teams is where Mayo found a home, playing on nearly every unit for Carolina. He should slide into the back end of the inside linebacker depth chart and be a contributor right away.
