There’s a seismic shakeup coming in the 49ers’ front office. Assistant general manager Adam Peters, who has been in San Francisco since the 2017 season under general manger John Lynch, is joining the Commanders as their new GM according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

This is the second time the Commanders have tapped the 49ers’ front office for a new GM. They also hired Martin Mayhew away from San Francisco to be their GM ahead of the 2021 season. Mayhew’s status with Washington remains unclear, but he could return to the 49ers to replace Peters, who was promoted to assistant GM in 2021.

Peters has been in the NFL for 21 years and spent the last seven seasons in the Bay Area, where he met Warriors president of basketball operations Bob Myers. Myers was hired as part of an advisory committee hired by new Commanders owner Josh Harris to lead the search for the new leader of Washington’s front office.

San Francisco now has a gaping hole in its front office. Peters was a key component of a group that helped build a roster that’s gone to three of the last four NFC championship games.

While the team has Super Bowl aspirations to attend to for now, replacing Peters is going to be one of the biggest offseason boxes they’ll need to check once their playoff run is over.
