It’s been an eventful few days for the 49ers, who rode the high last week of landing Jimmy Garoppolo to a long-term contract to finding out Sunday one of their best young players, Reuben Foster, was embroiled in a domestic violence arrest. Regardless, the NFL calendar isn’t slowing down while San Francisco figures out what to do next. The NFL draft is still approaching and front office is making its plans with the scouting combine beginning two weeks from Tuesday.

Our friends at Draft Wire this week published a three-round mock draft projecting the first three rounds in April. Let’s take a quick look at the 49ers’ four selections and break down how the choices would fit.

Round 1 – Pick 9: Josh Jackson, CB, Iowa

The 49ers’ ranked 22nd in the NFL giving up an average of 235 yards passing per game. Starter Dontae Johnson is slated for free agency and was benched twice in games late in the season. Rookie third-round pick Ahkello Witherspoon was inexperienced but seems to be developing into a quality starter. The 49ers are likely to address cornerback in free agency, but the coverage unit is still a glaring need.

Jackson, at 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds, has ideal size for the 49ers’ Cover-3 scheme. He’s an aggressive defender that plays with physicality at the line of scrimmage and has length down the field to make plays. Jackson had a mind-blowing Junior season at Iowa, totaling 48 tackles and eight interceptions to lead the FBS – with two returned for touchdowns.
