Kyle Shanahan and company looking at another big WR?
On Thursday morning, the Stanford Cardinal held their Pro Day. John Lynch, former alumni, was on hand. As was head coach Kyle Shanahan. There were plenty more names that you’ll recognize on the San Francisco 49ers staff. Wide receivers coach Wes Welker was present. Offensive assistant Katie Sowers was with Welker, too. Lastly, special teams coordinator Richard Hightower was there as well.

Hightower is likely looking at Stanford punter Jake Bailey. Bailey averaged 44.1 yards per attempt in 2018.
WR J.J. Arcega-Whiteside is probably the player that the team was keeping an eye on. Arcega-Whiteside is 6’2, 225 pounds. He’s a very good athlete that was miscast at Stanford. He should have a much better career in the NFL. He also ran a 4.49 at the Pro Day today.
At Stanford’s pro day, J.J. Arcega-Whiteside ran a 4.49 forty-yard dash at 6-2, 225lbs. Grading on pro day curve, this indicates ~80th percentile height-adjusted speed.
For comparison based on frame: Dez Bryant (6-2, 220lbs) and Allen Robinson (6-2, 220lbs) ran 4.56 forty’s.

As a receiver, Arcega-Whiteside moves a lot better than you would expect for a player his size. He’s a good route runner that can also go up and get it. Seems to be a perfect blend at the position for what Shanahan covets. Watch these four routes against Oregon:

A bigger guy that can win the contested catch situations, but can also run away from you. Everyone was waiting to see what his timed speed was. There it is.
We’ll keep you updated if any of his shuttle drills are leaked.
