The NFL is tinkering with the rules surrounding alternate uniforms, which means the 49ers could wear their popular new white throwbacks up to three times in 2018.
Albert Breer of The MMQB reported this uniform-related tidbit in his column Monday:
Want some uniform news? The NFL is relaxing its policy to where teams will now be able to wear their alternates/throwbacks or color rush jerseys on three occasions during the season. It used to be that teams could only wear the former twice, but this gives teams the option to wear those three times. The upshot? The Rams will probably wear the blue-and-yellow throwbacks three times, and should be able to avoid wearing the mismatched blue-and-gold jerseys with the white-horned helmets.
Teams will sometimes release schedules indicating when they will wear certain uniforms. We haven’t seen that from the 49ers since they released their new set in May, but it seems likely they’ll take advantage of the new rule to wear them up to three games given how popular they’ve been among fans.
It seems likely the new throwbacks, honoring the last Super Bowl team from 1994, will be worn in the team’s Thursday night game against the Raiders Week 9 for “Color Rush.” Other options could include primetime games when the 49ers host the Rams Oct. 21 and travel to take on Aaron Rodgers and the Packers on “Monday Night Football” Oct. 15.
