Davis wants back in, but it won’t be with the 49ers.
News broke earlier this month that offensive lineman Anthony Davis was seeking reinstatement into the NFL. The 49ers’ 11th-overall pick in 2010 still belonged to San Francisco after being placed on the reserve/retired list in September of 2016.
On Tuesday, Davis was reinstated by the NFL, and subsequently released by the 49ers. He’s now a free agent and is allowed to sign with any NFL team.
Davis, 29, was drafted by former general manager Trent Baalke. He started 71 games at right tackle for the 49ers between 2010-14. In 2014, Davis played seven games before suffering a concussion that caused him to miss the remainder of the year along with the entire 2015 season. Davis returned in 2016 but only played the first series in the season-opener against the Los Angeles Rams.
The 49ers’ offensive line has been set since the start of the 2018 season. The team selected tackle Mike McGlinchey with the 9th-overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, who played admirably as a rookie opposite veteran left tackle Joe Staley. Guards Mike Person and Laken Tomlinson, along with center Weston Richburg round out the rest of the starters.
Davis is likely to draw interest from teams willing to take a risk on a once-budding offensive lineman. If signed, he’ll likely be competing for a backup spot and will face a steep uphill battle to prove he’s still capable after sitting out nearly four seasons.
