According to multiple national reporters, San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh is headed to the AFC. Saleh finalized a deal with the Tennessee Titans to become their next head coach.
Saleh was scheduled to interview with the Arizona Cardinals in-person on Tuesday. The Cardinals will have to pivot to another option.
This will be Saleh’s third stint in the AFC South. His first NFL job was with the Houston Texans from 2005 to 2010. He was also the Jacksonville Jaguars’ linebackers coach from 2014 to 2016. Now, he follows DeMeco Ryans to the AFC South and will get a chance to face Liam Coen multiple times a year.
Saleh had beef with Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen. Earlier this season, Saleh approached Coen postgame, telling the Jags’ head coach to keep his name out of his mouth or else he would “F*ck your world up.” This remains one of the funniest parts of last season.
The 49ers will need to find a new defensive coordinator. He’s likely already in the building, as Gus Bradley is who Saleh learned from. We may see interviews, like Raheem Morris, but it feels like it’s Bradley’s job until further notice.
It’s worth noting that the 49ers will not receive a third-round compensatory pick because Saleh was only with the 49ers for one year in his second stint. The requirement is that Saleh would have needed to be with the 49ers for two years.
