The 49ers used the 190th pick in the 2020 NFL draft to add a tight end, selecting Georgia’s Charlie Woerner with the selection they picked up from the Eagles in a trade for wide receiver Marquise Goodwin.

Woerner has a good combination of size and athleticism at 6-5, 244 pounds. Where he lacks is in college production. He caught 34 balls for 376 yards and one touchdown in 27 games across four seasons with the Bulldogs.

He’ll likely carve out a role with the 49ers similar to the one he had in college. Most of his on-field time will be spent as a blocker, which is where he thrived in college. His athleticism may also get him an occasional look in the passing game. If he can provide even a little bit of production as a receiver while carving out a role as a blocking tight end, he’ll be a nice late-round upgrade to that position group.
