The best-case scenario for the 49ers season is one that puts them in a position to select elite edge rushing talent in the 2019 NFL draft. They did just that in the latest first-round projections put out by our friends at Draft Wire. San Francisco selects Ohio State EDGE Nick Bosa with the No. 3 overall pick.

Bosa is done playing this season as he recovers from an abdominal injury and readies himself for the NFL draft. He did manage 4.0 sacks and 6.0 tackles-for-loss in three games in this season for the Buckeyes. Bosa had 8.5 sacks and 16.0 tackles-for-loss as a sophomore in 2017.

It’s hard to imagine the 49ers do anything besides bolster their inept pass rush early in next year’s draft. Their list of needs goes beyond that one position, but the lack of a high-quality edge rusher badly exacerbates some of their other weaknesses.

If Bosa translates his high-energy and athleticism into productivity off the edge in the NFL, he’d be the perfect player for the 49ers to take with a top-three pick, and is probably the No. 1 prize in this year’s draft.
