The 49ers worked out three defensive lineman on Thursday, including veteran Kedric Golston who overlapped with Kyle Shanahan for four seasons in Washington.
Golston, 33, was Washington’s starting nose tackle last season but went on injured reserve following a severe hamstring tear in the second week of the season. He was medically cleared two and a half weeks ago and the 49ers were the first team that’s taken a look at the 11-year veteran.
Golston (6-4, 310) has started 142 games over his career and, if signed, he’d only be the second 30-something on the 49ers’ defense. Linebacker Ahmad Brooks, 33, is the other.
The team also worked out defensive ends Cedric Reed and Carlos Wray, according to the NFL Network and NBC Bay Area. Both entered the NFL as undrafted rookies and neither has played a regular season snap.
The 49ers have a deep, but largely undistinguished, defensive line.
They signed free agent Earl Mitchell to play nose tackle in the offseason and then drafted D.J. Jones in the sixth round to augment the position. Veteran Quinton Dial also is an option there.
