The 2018 NFL Combine has begun in Indianapolis, marking a significant point in the offseason for general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan as they begin their second year running the 49ers’ new regime.

San Francisco’s front office, tasked with improving the roster, will be all hands on deck as the scouting department observes the over 300 players attending the combine. The 49ers will use their evaluation to refine their big board of prospects that will eventually form the rookie class of 2018.

Currently, the 49ers own nine picks including five in the first four rounds. Lets take a look at the Draft Wire’s latest mock NFL draft and who they pegged for the 49ers with their first five selections:

Round 1 – Pick 9: Josh Jackson, CB, Iowa

The 49ers could address cornerback in free agency, but the coverage unit is still a glaring need. The 49ers’ secondary ranked 22nd in the NFL giving up an 235 yards passing per game. Starter Dontae Johnson is slated for free agency and was benched twice in games late in the season. Rookie third-round pick Ahkello Witherspoon was inexperienced but seems to be developing into a quality starter.

Jackson, at 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds, has the size for the 49ers’ Cover-3 scheme. He’s an aggressive defender that plays with physicality at the line of scrimmage and has length down the field to make plays. Jackson had an incredible Junior season at Iowa, totaling 48 tackles and eight interceptions to lead the FBS – with two returned for touchdowns.
