The 49ers’ season-ending loss to the Rams secured the No. 2 overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft.

San Francisco had a chance to climb back into the No. 1 pick with a Cardinals win, but Arizona’s last-second loss to the Seahawks ensured the 49ers would pick second.

The 49ers were one of three teams to finish with four wins. Oakland and the New York Jets both lost in Week 17 as well. That moved Picks 2-4 to a tiebreaker where the lower strength of schedule earned a higher pick. The 49ers had the worst strength of schedule among the four-win teams, meaning they secured the second pick.

It looked like San Francisco’s draft slot would take a hit when they beat the Broncos in Week 14, and then got another victory over the Seahawks in Week 15. They were slated to pick first going into Week 15, but they fell to No. 4 after that win.

After all the tumult of their December wins, they secured a top-two pick, and have themselves in prime position to add an elite player in next year’s draft.
