The 49ers are taking a long look at a pair of receivers who are very good with the ball in their hands

It’s no secret that the San Francisco 49ers are still looking to add help at the receiver position. Head coach Kyle Shanahan made that clear when he spoke at the owners meetings. Per Matt Barrows of the Athletic, the team is going to host a pair of receivers in the near future.

Common theme

Deebo Samuel

One of the receivers is South Carolina’s Deebo Samuel. The team coached Samuel at the Senior Bowl, but both wide receiver coaches Wes Welker and Miles Austin were not there. So letting them get a closeup on Samuel makes sense. Yesterday we talked about the Niners having an athletic threshold at the receiver position. Samuel tested very well. His 3-cone was 7.03. That is hardly an issue.

Samuel, who is 5’11 and 214 pounds, is known for being electric with the ball in his hands. He averaged 9.7 yards after the catch, which is second in the draft.

But his route running is equally impressive. Samuel does a good job of using his athleticism to get open as well.

He is expecting to go sometime during day two of the draft. Shanahan could line him up all over the field.

A.J. Brown

Brown is known as the “other” receiver on Ole Miss. Brown is 6’1, 230 pounds. Brown ran a 4.49 40-yard dash and had above average jumps. He did not do the shuttles, but Ole Miss has their Pro Day tomorrow. You have to imagine if he doesn’t run there, the 49ers will time him on their own.

Brown was primarily a slot receiver for Ole Miss. Because of that, the amount of routes he ran at Ole Miss were limited. That’s not to take away from Brown’s ability. He will make you look silly in the open field. He can also create separation with ease.

The common theme here is that both players are playmakers with the ball in their hands.
