That’s quite a long time

The NFL Draft gets going in just over two weeks and the San Francisco 49ers will be picking second. At least, for now. Kyle put together a good post on the players that went second over the last 10 years in the NFL draft. You’ll notice none of those players went to the 49ers.

So when was the last time the 49ers drafted second? Well, that was a while ago. A long while ago. The last time the 49ers made a pick at No. 2, Lyndon B. Johnson was president of the United States. The year? 1965. That’s 53 years. The folks over at Niners Wire pointed out how long it’s been since that No. 2 pick has been used.

Now the 49ers have held the second pick. However, they haven’t used the pick. The 49ers had the No. 2 pick in 2017, but then had a magnificent trade with the Chicago Bears to drop a single spot.

So who was the last player taken? Ken Willard from North Carolina. The pick was pretty nice. Willard was elected to the Pro Bowl four times in the 1960s. He also finished with 6,105 career rushing yards. A respectable total for the era, but he’s at 84th overall now, behind Michael Vick.

The 49ers are willing to trade out of the spot, but with the New York Giants rumored to be looking for a pass rusher and Kyler Murray going to the Arizona Cardinals, they may be using that No. 2 pick this year.
