The 49ers aren’t likely to stop their search for depth at any position with the 2019 draft fast approaching. 10 wins in two seasons points to a flawed roster that needs to be filled out. Depth would be a perfect role for former Maryland linebacker Tre Watson, who worked out for the 49ers according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Watson, listed at 6-2, 236 pounds, was a graduate transfer for Maryland in the 2018 season after playing his first three years at the University of Illinois. He didn’t get an invite to the combine, but he probably should have given his productivity in college.

A few things stand out statistically with Watson. He had two seasons with 11 games played and two with nine. In the two 11-game campaigns, he racked up over 100 tackles, and last year he posted five interceptions. His production last season earned him a First Team All-Big 10 nod. He also led the conference in tackles.

Watson doesn’t move very fluidly in the open field, but he’s smart enough to read plays and diagnose them quickly. His football IQ makes up for his lack of top-end athleticism, and his willingness to stick his nose in and deliver punishment stands out when watching him.

The inability to run with running backs and athletic tight ends may keep Watson from being an every-down player in the NFL, but he should be a very good special teams option right away with a chance to see some snaps as a run stopper on defense.
