After missing the opening game of the 2024 season against the New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers rusher Christian McCaffrey is set miss his second consecutive game due to an ankle, Achilles injury.
On Friday, the 49ers officially ruled McCaffrey out of their first road game of the season against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. Yet, McCaffrey’s stint on the sideline could be extended. On Friday, head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters in Santa Clara that the injured reserve is something being considered for McCaffrey.
It’s something we’re considering now, yeah. Yesterday was his worst day. It’s on and off, but with yesterday, having the most pain, it’s something we’re going to be discussing here in the next 24 hours.

McCaffery missed all of the preseason and most of training camp with the same injury. The Stanford product is coming off an All-Pro season with a career-high 1459 yards and 21 total touchdowns.
As long as McCaffrey is out, Jordan Mason will likely continue to assume a bulk of the starting running back responsibilities. In Week 1 against the Jets, Mason broke out with an impressive 147-yard rushing performance with a touchdown. Rookie Isaac Guerendo and veteran JJ Taylor will slide in behind Mason with McCaffrey sidelined.
The 49ers are set to meet the Vikings at 10 a.m. PT in Minnesota on Sunday.
