The 49ers’ deals with Dee Ford and Kwon Alexander couldn’t become official until the new league year started. It opened Wednesday at 1:00 PM PT, and Wednesday night the team officially announced the two new acquisitions for their defense.

Alexander agreed to his deal Monday shortly after the legal tampering period opened. His physical was going to be key since he tore his ACL in Week 7 last season. His contract is for four years, and worth up to $54 million, although the terms are extremely team friendly.

Snagging Ford away from the Chiefs was a little more difficult. They sent a 2020 second-round pick according to reports, but the official release didn’t specify what pick is going to Kansas City.

The Chiefs put a franchise tag on Ford, which meant the 49ers had to work out a multi-year contract before they could execute a trade. They hammered out a five-year deal worth a reported $87.5 million. No details have been confirmed.

Ford and Alexander figure to factor heavily into the 49ers’ front seven, with the former working as a primary pass rusher, and Alexander starting at WILL linebacker.

San Francisco on Wednesday also signed running back Tevin Coleman and defensive back Jimmie Ward, but those acquisitions were not officially announced.
