How the 49ers reacted to Rams trading for Myles Garrett
“I was like, ‘Oh, that’s AI or whatever,’” Jones said, laughing. “I saw the blue check and I was like, ‘No, click on his profile.’ Then I was like, ‘Shoot, that’s crazy.’ Myles is a great player.”
As the reality of Garrett’s arrival to one of the 49ers’ biggest divisional rivals set in, the reactions in San Francisco ranged from Jones’ disbelief to a shrug and a laugh, not because of a lack of respect for Garrett, but because the already difficult NFC West never seems to take a day off when it comes to its on-going arms race.“
A no-drama wideout? 49ers embrace Mike Evans as a coach, dad and ‘real dude’ (paywall)
“The six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver has toggled between two teams since he signed his three-year, $42.4 million contract in March: His new team, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Mike Evans Elite AAU basketball team based outside Houston in Katy, Texas, which includes one of his three daughters.
“I feel like I’m a fair coach,” Evans said. “I coach them hard. But I coach girls – 14-year-old girls — so that’s a lot to deal with. It’s been going well. Our last tournament wasn’t a great showing, but we’ve gotten better compared to last year. I’m looking forward to finishing up the summer strong.”
Evans’ side gig is a reminder that he’s more than the most decorated wide receiver the 49ers have had since Terrell Ownens’ final season in 2003. He’s a father of four who has been married since 2016 and is a four-time nominee for the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year award due to his work to support youth education, single moms and domestic-violence victims.“
49ers rookie Kaelon Black earns strong endorsement from Greg Cosell
“I really liked his tape a lot,” Cosell said on the Ross Tucker Podcast. “I think that he fits the way the 49ers play offense. He’s tough. He’s physical. He’s got some juice to him. He gets hard yards. It would not surprise me if he earns the job as the backup to McCaffrey, because I thought his tape was really, really good.”
Fred Warner believes the 49ers have a ‘three-headed monster’ along the defensive line
“Warner continued: “A three-headed monster at D-line in Alfred Collins, CJ West, Mykel coming off injury. I think all three of those guys have an opportunity to really take a next step. Mykel, even coming off the ACL, I think his mindset, the way that he looks right now, I think he’ll be great when he does come back; I think all those guys are going to do really good this year.”
Those three were incredible run defenders last season. The 49ers run defense allowed a 42% success rate and a 4.9% explosive run rate with Williams on the field. When he wasn’t playing, those numbers skyrocketed to 52.9% and 11.8%.
Collins and West taking on and holding their ground against double teams last year were one of the bright spots along a defense that didn’t have many. It’s a sign that those two can be building blocks in the middle.“
