A lot has changed since the first version of our Round 1 NFL draft prospect rankings for the 49ers. That list came before the testing at the scouting combine and the team’s five additions in free agency, shaking up the order of our top 10 dramatically and adding a new player to the mix.

A reminder of how this works: Our writers, Rob LowderJerod BrownKyle Madson and myself, each listed the top-10 first round prospects based on how good of a selection they would be for San Francisco at pick No. 9 given roster needs and scheme fit. Each spot was designated on a point scale (top spot gets 10 points, bottom gets one, etc.). We tallied the totals to create our prospect power rankings.

Let’s get to our second Round 1 prospect rankings of the draft season.

10. Connor Williams | OL | Texas

(Previous ranking: 10)

Since becoming an offensive coordinator in 2008, the only offensive players Kyle Shanahan’s teams have used first-round picks on were quarterbacks (Robert Griffin III, Johnny Manziel) and tackle (Duane Brown, Trent Williams). The 49ers are set at quarterback after making Jimmy Garoppolo one of the league’s highest players, but questions about the long-term status of both tackle spots remain. Joe Staley will turn 34 in August and Trent Brown is unsigned beyond 2018. Williams (6-5, 296) could potentially cut his teeth at guard, where the team still needs upgrades, while getting groomed to replace Staley or Brown down the line.

9. Denzel Ward | CB| Ohio State

(Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports)

(Previous ranking: 8)

Ward came out of the combine as the unquestioned top cornerback in the draft. And it remains a pressing need for San Francisco after landing Richard Sherman because his age (he turns 30 next week) and health (two Achilles surgeries this offseason) are question marks for the long haul. However, Ward (5-11, 183, 31 1/4-inch arms) doesn’t have the physical profile the team typically covets for its corners outside. But Ward could presumably play in the slot, offering an upgrade to K’Waun Williams at a position that could be on the field for 70 percent of the snaps.
