The San Francisco 49ers’ 2024 rookie class is in a little bit of a strange spot.
At times it looks like the team is ready to thrust their draft picks into larger roles, or at least start expanding those roles. Then other times they’ll have the rug pulled out where they’re not playing at all.
While the usage of the healthy players has been up-and-down, we can’t forget about WR Ricky Pearsall. The first-round pick was shot through the chest the weekend before the regular season started. Week 5 was the first week he was eligible to return from the Non-Football Injury list, but the team elected to not to open his practice window. They skipped that same opportunity in Week 6 in part due to the shortened week with a Thursday night game looming.
Perhaps the club will activate him during their mini-bye after the Thursday game. They may wait until their actual bye in Week 9. Or they could think Pearsall is so far behind after missing camp with two different injuries that a ‘redshirt’ year might be best for him.
We’ll keep a close eye on the No. 31 overall pick’s status through those extended times off. For now, here’s what the rookie class has looked like through five weeks:
