Practice was halted early on Tuesday after 49ers rookie linebacker Donavin Newsom collided with a teammate, appeared to lose consciousness and then was taken off the field in an ambulance.
Afterward coach Kyle Shanahan said Newsom’s eyes were open and that he had movement, including in his lower body, as he was being taken away. Newsom will be examined at an area hospital while the 49ers try to contact his family.
“I’d like to talk to the family and find out everything before I start speculating on anything,” Shanahan said.
The injured occurred toward the end of practice when both Newsom, an undrafted rookie from Missouri, and safety Chanceller James broke on a pass from quarterback C.J. Beathard. Newsom lay on his back with his arms splayed outward and teammates immediately called for the training staff.
When Newsom showed no signs of movement initially, emergency medical technicians who are on hand for every practice were called in and Newsome was placed on a back brace and then taken away in an ambulance that had been driven onto the field.
All of the players took a knee and formed a large circle around their fallen teammate while technicians worked on him. Several players seemed to be comforted that Newsom was moving his fingers during the ordeal.
