We’re going to try something a little bit different throughout the NFL draft season in 2018. Our four-man crew here at Niners Wire is going to periodically create power rankings for Round 1 NFL draft prospects that make sense for the 49ers at pick No. 9 or 10, depending on the coin flip with the Raiders on Friday.

The purpose of the exercise is to illustrate how the stock of prospects might fluctuate relative to how San Francisco constructs its roster before April 26. For example, the 49ers might make additions in free agency, prospects could suffer injuries and others could test well and fly up draft boards. A myriad of factors could change the way the class is viewed over the next 56 days, which will be reflected in these rankings.

So our writers, Rob Lowder, Jerod Brown, Kyle Madson and myself, each listed the top-10 Round 1 prospects based on how good of a selection they would be for the 49ers given roster needs and scheme fit. Each spot was designated with a number grade (top spot gets 10 points, bottom gets one, etc.). We tallied the totals to create our first ever prospect power rankings on the even of combine testing starting on Friday.

No. 10 – Connor Williams | T | Texas

Good tackles are hard to come by and the 49ers are eventually going to have to plan for life after 33-year-old Joe Staley. Williams (6-5, 296) might be the best tackle prospect in the class. He’s physical enough to try at guard to get seasoning inside before moving to either left or right tackle full time down the road.

No. 9 – Harold Landry | Edge | Boston College

There’s no doubt the 49ers need to improve their pass rush after ranking 27th in the NFL with 30 sacks last season. Landry is a speed rusher off the edge who could be the missing piece to help get off the field on third down. San Francisco was third worst in 2017 allowing opponents to convert 43 percent. The question for Landry: Why did he only have five sacks last season after logging 16.5 in 2016?
