The 49ers stood pat with the No. 2 overall selection in the first round of the NFL Draft, and selected Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa.

Bosa was the consensus top player going into the draft, but the Arizona Cardinals opted to select Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray first overall, allowing the former Buckeye to drop to San Francisco.

It took a bit of luck for the 49ers to even land the No. 2 pick. It was another stroke of luck to have Bosa slide to them at that spot. He checks both boxes as the best player available, and filling the 49ers’ top need – the ideal situation for the second overall pick.

Bosa missed most of his junior year at Ohio State with an abdominal injury that required surgery. He could’ve returned late in the year, but opted to prepare for the NFL draft instead. In three games he still managed 4.0 sacks and 6.0 tackles for loss. His totals during his three-year college career included 17.5 sacks and 29.0 tackles for loss in 29 games.

The 49ers are next scheduled to pick at No. 36 – the fourth overall selection in Round 2.
